Feeding your baby on a budget

Support for breastfeeding, savings on formula, and what never to do.

6 min read

However you feed your baby, there are ways to keep the cost down without cutting corners on safety.

Breastfeeding

  • Most health plans must cover a breast pump and lactation support; ask your plan how to get one
  • Hospital and WIC lactation consultants are often free
  • Buy bottles and pump parts after you know what you need

Formula

  • Store-brand infant formula sold in the US has to meet the same FDA nutrition requirements as name brands
  • Powder usually costs less than ready-to-feed
  • Ask your pediatrician before switching brands
  • Sign up for formula makers' free programs for coupons if you use a brand

Never do this to save money

  • Never add extra water to formula to stretch it
  • Never make homemade formula
  • Never use formula past its use-by date

Starting solids

Plain mashed foods from your own meals (without added salt or sugar) cost far less than pouches. Ask your pediatrician when and how to start.
