Guides / Before baby
Add your baby to health insurance on time
A birth opens a special enrollment window, and the clock is short.
Having a baby lets you add them to a health plan outside the usual enrollment season. The window is short, so put it on your list before the birth.
Deadlines to know
- Employer plans must give you at least 30 days after the birth to enroll the baby
- Marketplace (HealthCare.gov or your state's exchange) plans give you 60 days
- Medicaid and CHIP can enroll at any time of year
Steps
- Before the birth, ask HR or your plan how to add a newborn
- Compare the cost of adding the baby to each parent's plan if you have two options
- Enroll as soon as you can after the birth, even before the Social Security number arrives if your plan allows
- Check the first statements to make sure the baby's visits are billed correctly
